st ives mixed medias

Treeline, St Ives, mixed media on paper, 84 x 60cm, 2016. Not for sale.

CORNISH TREELINE

This is a mixed media slice of a Cornish hill. At the top, there are a few windblown trees so characteristic of the area, perched on a very steep hill which led down into a valley - so deep it’s almost a ravine - where the riverbed is. Again, I was thinking about the geology behind and the depth within the landscape; restricting myself to use broad brush strokes and very little colour in order to allude to the fierceness of it. I was working towards abstract compositions at scale, using different marks and papers to bring depth where ordinarily there’d be colour.

ST IVES monoprints

These three monoprints were quick, abstract explorations of texture and forms found in and around St Ives town. The first two were made near the St Ives Tate gallery, which has a brutalist feel to it, even though it was built in the 80s. The last was made on the beach - I think you can get a sense of that in the changing strokes.
